Water Quality Sampling at Bundoran Farm

Bundoran Farm is more than just beautiful land sale in the just outside of Charlottesville, VA.  As part of the mission of Preservation Development we are working to study and improve the natural resources of this legacy landscape.

In cooperation with Audubon International, a stream water quality sampling regime was initiated at Bundoran Farm in the Fall of 2006, and continues today.  Eight sampling stations have been established throughout the farm, and include five stations within fields grazed by cattle, and three upstream stations not impacted by cattle.

The purpose of the water quality monitoring is to obtain baseline data from several streams on the property impacted by cattle, and to measure improvements in the water quality after Best Management Practices have been installed.  The three sampling sites upstream of cattle influence also serve as controls, providing background water chemistry from natural forested systems.

The primary Best Management Practice utilized at Bundoran Farm is cattle exclusion (fencing) from streams, and installation of alternative water sources for the cattle.  Since the initiation of this project, two of the streams being sampled have been fenced off from the cattle.   Based upon the data collected to date, marked improvements in quality are anticipated.
