Virginia Farmers Market Week and Launch of the “Save Our Food” Campaign

The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation held a news conference at Charlottesville’s Meade Park Farmers Market yesterday to launch its “Save Our Food” campaign.  An article in The Daily Progress today describes the event: http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/feeding_the_economy_with_local_produce/25854/

The campaign hopes to raise awareness of the nutritional, environmental and economic benefits of buying locally grown food.  The www.saveourfood.org web site provides current news and information about Virginia farming, events, recipes and a fresh food locator.  The web site will be launching a blog in the coming weeks to keep the community informed and passionate about the cause for a safe, fresh and local food supply.  An updated list of Virginia farmers markets, including locations and hours, is available online at http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/index.shtml.

Governor Tim Kaine has proclaimed this week, August 3 – 9, 2008, Virginia Farmers Market Week.  As part of Virginia Farmers Market Week, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) has issued a challenge to residents to pick a day during Farmers Market Week and on that day eat only products from Virginia for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  Bundoran Farm supports the eat local for a day challenge: http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/news/releases-a/072808eatlocal.shtml.  Bundoran Farm is dedicated to supporting the local food economy and making local food easier to obtain.
