LEED Certification at Bundoran Farm

Bundoran Farm residents Grady and Diane Lewis have just been notified that their home, the second completed at Bundoran Farm, will be certified LEED Silver.  LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most rigorous common green-building certification program, overseen by the US Green Building Council, who have historically set the standard for commercial and institutional green building projects, only recently moving into home construction.  Merely being certified is an achievement, especially for a rural home, which doesn’t get any of the “easy points,” like proximity to train stations.

Achieving Silver rating is no mean feat, requiring not just solid green building techniques, but substantial documentation of these techniques, and testing to prove their efficacy.  The Lewises took a hands-on approach with this process, with help from architect Jeff Sties of Sunbiosis, who’s also working on what will be the third or fourth home at Bundoran, over on Hightop Drive.  Aside from the substantial technical achievement, we think the Lewis home demonstrates, for anyone who was still wondering, that responsible building and aesthetics are not in conflict.  The home’s proportions, materials and details, overseen by builder John Diven of Shelter, Ltd., are as exemplary as the elements scored by LEED.

Congratulations to the Lewises, Jeff Sties and Shelter on this milestone.
