Finish construction continues to accelerate at the Baldwin Center. Quickly on the heels of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins blogged last week, teldata and AV prewiring went in. In a highly-efficient two day install, we’ve now prepared to receive the torrent of digital information that can come through this facility on our now-operational Fiber-to-the-Home [...]

Our friend Coy Barefoot, Executive Director of the Sorenson Institute, called at the last minute today to invite us on his afternoon-drive radio program, Charlottesville Right Now, on 1070 WINA. We had a good conversation about what’s happening at Bundoran Farm and the Baldwin Center these days, with a healthy recap for listeners who (hard to believe) might [...]

Progress on the Baldwin Center continues as we race toward our Autumn opening. This Spring’s daily inspirational play-by-play from Geobarns’ George Abetti, covering the innovative and lightning-fast structural framing, hasn’t really been warranted recently, but the achievements of the past month have been no less important. The images here show the unglamorous side of construction, [...]

It’s one thing to hear from the developers, architects and builders what the home design and building process is like, it’s quite another to hear from the owners of the house. Hear Grady and Diane Lewis, chat about what their experience was like during the design and construction of their new home at Bundoran Farm.
As mentioned by [...]

Last week residents and friends of Bundoran Farm and the Homestead Preserve joined the Baldwin Center for a study tour of agrarian practices in place at Polyface Farm. On his pasture-base, beyond organic, local-market farm, Joel Salatin raises animals with ethically and ecologically-sound methods that mimic natural movement patterns and preserve the landscape.
The self-declared “Christian-Libertarian-Environmentalist-Capitalist-Lunatic” [...]

The current issue of The Piedmont Virginian includes a review of photographer Jim Hanna’s recent exhibition, Rural Culture on the Edge. I’m not familiar with Hanna, but he’s just become a leading contender for official artist of the Baldwin Center, if we are ever to have such a position.
This series of photographs, including the poorly-scanned thumbnail [...]

Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia visited Bundoran Farm on his way to celebrate the grand opening of Albemarle Ciderworks located just a bit up the road from us. Albemarle Ciderworks is a family-run Cidery and Tasting Room that produces cider from heritage varieties of apples that can thrive in Albemarle County.
After circling around a couple [...]

One of the wonderful features of Bundoran Farm is the breadth of experience available within an easy day trip. Mountains to the west, world class museums to the northeast, and of course that’s after you exhaust Charlottesville and UVA, which will take a while.
Though not strictly related to Bundoran Farm, or to the mission of [...]

There’s an excellent article in the Washington Post, by Jane Black, my new favorite food writer. It’s on Jim Dunlap, a retired CIA man who’s farming impressively on modest acreage in Loudon County, smack dab among the mansions of the encroaching exurban frontier. The article covers a number of land use and policy questions familiar [...]
